How Utilities Can Leverage the Power of Digital to Stay Relevant - Sagacity

#artificialintelligence

For a long time, digitalization has been at the heart of the transformation of major utility companies, significantly contributing to the reshaping and reinventing of their business processes and business models. This is also because there is a growing urgency to adapt to the new'climate' ecosystem that is environmentally sustainable and economically efficient. As more utility companies continue to face unique challenges, digital transformation initiatives are now a must, considering the demands of changing customer expectations and market needs. Going by this Accenture report, 59% of utility company executives say that the pace of digital transformation for their organization is accelerating. This is likely to further gain momentum as more utilities companies begin to adopt renewable sources of energy.

How AI is accelerating the transition to renewable energy

#artificialintelligence

Offshore wind power has fast become one of the most promising renewable sources of energy. Its growth is expected to continue, with generation capacity predicted to soar from 35GW to 234GW over the next 10 years, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), which ranks the UK, Germany, and China as the largest national markets. The sector is a particular focus in governments' energy strategies, given the plummeting costs and the fact turbines can now be placed ever further from coastlines. Boris Johnson has even stated that he wants the UK to become the'Saudi Arabia of wind power'. The GWEC predicts significant growth over the next five years, with an estimated compound annual growth rate of nearly 32 percent, compared to just 0.3 percent with land-based turbines.

Artificial Intelligence Is Improving Energy Companies -- Not Replacing Workers

#artificialintelligence

Abbreviation is Artificial Intelligence on a digital globe background. A power plant that will run on "artificial intelligence" is about to get underway in West Africa. The joint venture between Swiss-based Xcell Security House and Finance and U.S.-based Beyond Limits will embed intelligence and awareness into the operations -- something that will create more efficiencies, greater productivity, and increased environmental protections. When ordinary people hear about artificial intelligence -- AI for short -- they immediately think about how machines will replace humans. But as the experts explained to this reporter, AI is meant to eliminate "mundane activities" so that those running heavy industrial operations can solve problems and improve performance, which translates into healthier bottom lines.

Tesla is becoming more of an artificial intelligence and robotic company, says Elon Musk - Electrek

#artificialintelligence

Elon Musk made the argument that Tesla is going to be known more as an artificial intelligence and robotic company. For a while now, Musk has been pushing this idea that investors shouldn't just see Tesla as an automaker and energy company, but as a group of startups. He argues that Tesla's service centers are a startup, Tesla's insurance company is a startup, Tesla's automation group is a startup, etc. In that vein, Musk now claims that artificial intelligence and robotics are going to be just as synonymous with Tesla as cars and energy. The CEO commented during a conference call discussing Tesla's Q1 2021 financial results: Although right now people think of Tesla as a car company or as an energy company. I think long term, people will think of Tesla as much as an AI robotics company as we are a car company or an energy company.

Productionising AI knowledge management

#artificialintelligence

Using AI for knowledge management is a great way to industrialise years of innovation on a company-wide level, writes Dr Warrick Cooke, Consultant at Tessella. An engineer who has worked in the same place – a factory, oil rig, nuclear power plant – for 20 years will be an expert in that facility. Their been-there-done-that experience means they can quickly make good decisions on the best response to a wide range of scenarios. That knowledge would be hugely valuable to others. It is also knowledge that will be lost when they move on.

AI, Machine Learning and Renewable Energy - Pexapark

His opinion lends credence to the assumption made in this article, namely that renewable energy, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are not only intricately linked, but that'smart' renewable energy must be considered the most sustainable way forward for our energy needs. And it will increasingly continue to do so. Along with allied technologies such as ML, deep learning and advanced neural networks, AI has transformative potential for the global energy sector. An important caveat regarding the fossil fuel-renewable energy dichotomy will also be discussed at article's conclusion. ML is already entrenched in our everyday lives, from smart phone assistants like Apple's Siri or Samsung's Bixby, to voice and image recognition systems. More important even will be ML's ability to assist in tackling some of the world's most pressing physical and logistical problems, including that pertaining to the full potential of renewable energy.

Transforming the energy industry with AI

MIT Technology Review

However, most companies don't have the resources to implement sophisticated AI programs to stay secure and advance digital capabilities on their own. Irrespective of size, available budget, and in-house personnel, all energy companies must manage operations and security fundamentals to ensure they have visibility and monitoring across powerful digital tools to remain resilient and competitive. The achievement of that goal is much more likely in partnership with the right experts. MIT Technology Review Insights, in association with Siemens Energy, spoke to more than a dozen information technology (IT) and cybersecurity executives at oil and gas companies worldwide to gain insight about how AI is affecting their digital transformation and cybersecurity strategies in oil and gas operating environments. Energy sector organizations are presented with a major opportunity to deploy AI and build out a data strategy that optimizes production and uncovers new business models, as well as secure operational technology. Oil and gas companies are faced with unprecedented uncertainty--depressed oil and gas prices due to the coronavirus pandemic, a multiyear glut in the market, and the drive to go green--and many are making a rapid transition to digitalization as a matter of survival.

Understanding Edge Computing

#artificialintelligence

The world is changing at a rapid pace. Not only are smartphones and technology a way of life, but there are connected IoT devices all around us, enabling everything from smart home appliances to cameras to industrial robots inside of factories. Meanwhile, IoT devices are generating massive amounts of data (in some cases petabytes) that need to be processed and stored. So, why does the edge come into play here instead of the cloud? Edge computing provides the high-powered processing power of the cloud, but closer to the IoT device, enabling a faster turnaround time for analytics and data insights.
